The Loop with Craig Maravich: The Elements of Folly

Have you ever wanted to be part of the artistic process? The second installment of The Loop series at Town Hall Theater invites you to explore the elements of folly through a performance that travels from the Anderson Studio to Jean's Place to the Rothrock Mainstage. Along the way, we'll explore the role of the comedic fool in turbulent times.
Join director Craig Maravich, Lindsay Pontius (THT's Director of Learning & Engagement), the cast of Urinetown, and Beyond the Page actors for a delightful immersive experience. This event plays with the idea that employing laughter as a foil to authority and power provokes thoughtful dialogue. Paritcipants will be treated to the world of slapstick, buffoonery, and wordplay.
The Loop blurs the line between artist and audience, inviting attendees to engage in the creative process. One participant, reflecting on a previous Loop event featuring the interdisciplinary collaboration of dancer/choreographer Laurel Jenkins and Grammy-nominated singer/composer Moira Smiley, shared:
“How can I get more absurd, beautiful moments like this in my life?”
At Town Hall Theater, we believe audiences are an essential part of the artistic circle. The Loop offers a rare opportunity to witness art as it is being made.

When nature calls, people must pay to use public amenities, all controlled by a single evil corporation: Urine Good Company. But when a hero emerges to start a revolution, we see what happens when the power of the people rises up against injustice!
URINETOWN is a hilarious satire of corporate greed, social irresponsibility, and musical theatre itself. It's also a love story! Blending sharp humor, social commentary, and absurdism, this show has delighted audiences across the globe for decades.
This production is the culminating work of Middlebury College's J-Term course "Making a Musical: Process and Performance." Over 40 students collaborate across cast, orchestra, design, and stage crew, working alongside professional theatre-makers and college faculty to bring this show to life.

Due to critical acclaim and overwhelming audience response, the Met-premiere production of The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, recorded live earlier this season, has been added to the Live in HD lineup. This exhilarating operatic adaptation of Michael Chabon’s Pulitzer Prize–winning novel, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, follows the story of two Jewish cousins who unlock a new avenue of resistance against tyranny through the world of superheroes during World War II. The production by Tony Award–winning director Bartlett Sher provides spectacular visuals with towering sets and projections among the three worlds of the story: Nazi-occupied Prague, the bustling streets of New York City, and the technicolor realm of comic-book fantasy. Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts Mason Bates’s eclectic, cinematic score, which incorporates scintillating electronic elements and a variety of musical styles. The New York scenes feature inflections of jazz and big band, the music for Prague is noticeably darker and more somber, and the composer’s trademark use of electronica reaches its full fruition in the scenes set in the comic-book realm. | Reserve Tickets |

Part history class, part film festival: THT's Founder and Resident Director Doug Anderson guides you through the golden age of Hollywood musicals the way they were meant to be experienced—on the big screen.
Each session starts with Doug sharing insights about the studios, directors, and stars who shaped the era. Then settle in to watch one of the defining musicals of those years.
This course is a follow-up to Doug's popular fall series, which explored films from 1930-1950 and the developments in technology and taste that shaped the movie musical's Golden Age. If you missed Part 1, don't worry—Doug will begin Part 2 with a recap of important early films and ideas.
The 4-session Spring course picks up in the 1950s, when the old studio system began to crumble. As the country entered the turbulent 1960s, the movie musical found itself searching for new directions and new audiences

Join Vermont Book Shop for an evening with Weybridge author and psychologist Devon Jersild to celebrate the launch of her debut novel Luminous Bodies.
Based on years of meticulous research, Luminous Bodies explores the intimate aspects of Nobel Prize-winning scientist Marie Curie's life as only good fiction can.
Jersild's psychologically rich narrative follows Curie from her girlhood in Poland during the Russian occupation through the myriad complications of her adult life: marriage, motherhood, widowhood, and a love affair that resulted in her ostracization from both society and her beloved scientific community. Stretching beyond the mythical image of Curie as a woman of drive and consequence, Luminous Bodies invites the reader to experience her deeply personal losses and the loss of faith she suffered in the face of a pitiless patriarchy. Most critically, Jersild portrays a woman who managed to live a rich emotional and intellectual life in spite of tremendous struggles, a woman who triumphed against almost unimaginable odds.

Presented by Middlebury Acting Company, Town Hall Theater's professional resident theater company, delivering playful, intimate and conversation sparking productions since 2001.
"Simple Sage" by Vermont playwright Kate Youngdahl-Stauss is based on the curious true story of a house in Granville Vermont built in the 18th Century that still stands today. In the 19th Century the house was occupied by the Lamb sisters, two of whom married John Deere. Then in the 1930’s several lesbian farmers came to Granville and rescued the house and land after the collapse of the lumber industry. Tales of Vermont women during these two eras facing the parallel themes of social restraint and the degradation of the natural landscape are woven together in the play revealing a potential message for our own time. The playwright, Kate Youngdahl-Stauss will be at the performance and will participate in the talk-back after the performance.

Get ready for an evening of non-stop laughter and classic screwball comedy as The Middlebury Community Players present Ken Ludwig’s hilarious play, “Moon Over Buffalo.” This fast-paced homage to theater is a perfect storm of theatrical chaos: a paternity announcement, a visit from their daughter’s weatherman-fiancé, a deaf mother-in-law’s confusion over Irish coffee, and a series of mistaken identities, dropped lines, and rapid-fire costume changes that run wildly off the rails.
Ken Ludwig stuffs his play with comic invention and running gags. The audience is in for an evening of pure farcical delight, complete with slamming doors, a sword fight, and bravura performances from the talented cast.

Workshop with Matthew Dickerson on Artist Residencies
Saturday, February 21 at 1pm in the Anderson Studio
Middlebury College Computer Science Professor, nature photographer, and non-fiction writer Matthew Dickerson will lead a how-to workshop on securing artist residencies. This two-and-a-half-hour workshop is free with registration, thanks to support from The Vermont Creative Network.
The workshop will cover:
- An overview of artist residencies, including how to find them and whether a residency might be right for you.
- Tips on applying (based on examples of several successful applications and conversations with those in charge on how choices are made). This part will be hands-on, and participants will begin crafting a purpose statement.
- How to use the time during the actual residency if selected.
- What to do after the residency ends to get maximum benefit.
Workshop attendees will also have the opportunity to mingle with other participants, and to take in an exhibit in Town Hall Theater's Jackson Gallery highlighting Matthew Dickerson's photography and writing, which also profiles his daughter-in-law McKenna Dickerson's nature painting. Snacks and beverages will be provided. Space is limited and registration is required at townhalltheater.org.
About Matthew Dickerson:
Matthew Dickerson has served as artist-in-residence at Glacier National Park, Acadia National Park, and Wood Tikchik State Park (Alaska), and twice collaborated with his daughter McKenna as artists-in-residence for Alaska State Parks. Six of his published books grew out of these residencies.

Great Art Wednesday is a monthly art exhibition film series running from October 2025 to May 2026.
Pierre Auguste Renoir is known and loved for his impressionist paintings of Paris which rank among the world’s favourites. Renoir, however, grew tired of this style and changed course.
This stunning film – based on the remarkable Renoir collection at Philadelphia’s Barnes Foundation – explores the artist’s new approach. These later works still provoke extreme reactions – some people are repulsed by them and others seduced.
Two 20th century titans– Picasso and Matisse are intriguingly among the many artists who were clearly influenced by Renoir’s later direction. This film is a new biography of an artistic giant – Renoir – but also uncovers an untold story that identifies him as a significant link between the art world’s old order and the new.

Katie Martucci is a performer, bandleader, singer and composer, who is a graduate of New England Conservatory, and has been featured on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Her latest release ‘Note to Self’ on La Reserve Records is a collection of songs about the “unspoken third thing in the room” — stories surrounding friendship, family history, imposter syndrome, her own personal journey with epilepsy and more.

The Metropolitan Opera’s 2025–26 Live in HD season comes to a close with a live transmission of American composer Gabriela Lena Frank’s first opera, a magical-realist portrait of Mexico’s painterly power couple Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, with libretto by Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Nilo Cruz. Fashioned as a reversal of the Orpheus and Euridice myth, the story depicts Frida, sung by leading mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard, leaving the underworld on the Day of the Dead and reuniting with Diego, portrayed by baritone Carlos Álvarez. The famously feuding pair briefly relive their tumultuous love, embracing both the passion and the pain before bidding the land of the living a final farewell.
