"Huēhuētl": Voices of the Ancestors

Join us for an evening of world percussion as we honor the memory of Ricardo Peña, a devoted guardian of indigenous culture and musical traditions of the Americas. The "huēhuētl"—the sacred drum of the Aztec tradition, which Ricardo played—is known as the voice of the ancestors, carrying forward the stories, rhythms, and wisdom of those who came before us. In this spirit, our student performers will share percussion pieces from around the world, each drum serving as its own ancestral voice, connecting us across cultures and generations. Through rhythm and remembrance, we celebrate Ricardo's lifelong commitment to keeping these vital traditions alive, and we invite you to experience the power of the drum to speak across time, carrying the past into the present and future.

World Music students will be performing grade level composition pieces, Japanese Taiko, Afro-Brazilian, Spanish Cajon drumming pieces. Guest artists from the World Dance department and Contemporary Music department will join us on stage for our finale, you don't want to miss!
