The Importance of Being Earnest is Oscar Wilde's satirical comedy about two bachelors, Jack and Algernon, who create fake identities (like the imaginary "Ernest") to escape social duties, only to find romance entangled with their lies, culminating in the discovery that Jack is actually named Ernest, highlighting Victorian hypocrisy through witty wordplay on name and character.
