The House Between
A development reading of a new play written by Serhat Pala
Directed by Sean Boyd
About the Show
“The House Between” is the story of people who have carried more than one place in their body and mind, and been asked to pick one. Chrissy is a Greek-Australian artist in Melbourne, practiced at making “fine” look convincing. Hakan is a Turkish-American economics historian in Boston, practiced at explaining everything except the one thing that keeps bothering him: where he belongs. Each carries a family story shaped by departure. Each carries a photo, a name, an address that survived because someone refused to throw it away. They travel to Ayvalık (Türkiye) chasing the same ruined house from opposite histories. What starts as a coincidence at a doorframe becomes a slow love story with consequences: their grown children arrive, the romance becomes visible, and the question turns urgent: Are they repairing the past, escaping it, or finally choosing where to stand? In a courtyard of fig leaves, olive shade, tea and coffee, the house keeps its own memory of cracks, birds, and tokens of history. This is not a story to work on “solving” history. It is more of an immigrant story: where do you belong, and what do you call home when home keeps moving? Because for immigrants, home isn’t a place you find. It’s a place you choose; one more time, for the first time and the last.
