The Measure of Our Days
Join the Grand Forks Master Chorale for a powerful and thought-provoking evening of choral music in The Measure of Our Days, featuring guest organist Benton Schmidt. This compelling program explores humanity’s shared moral and spiritual journey through masterworks of the choral canon, inviting audiences into a deeply reflective and resonant musical experience.
At the heart of the program is Psalm 90 by Charles Ives, a profound meditation on human mortality, accountability, and the passage of time. Its timeless message anchors the concert’s exploration of what it means to reckon with “the measure of our days.”
Benjamin Britten’s "Rejoice in the Lamb" offers a bold and unconventional expression of faith, while Einojuhani Rautavaara’s Credo affirms belief with striking intensity and conviction. Together, these works illuminate faith as both a personal declaration and a communal witness.
The program also gives voice to lament and compassion. Tomás Luis de Victoria’s O Vos Omnes draws listeners into a shared experience of grief and empathy through its deeply moving portrayal of suffering.
Contrasting yet complementary perspectives emerge in Arvo Pärt’s The Beatitudes and Leoš Janáček’s Otčenáš (The Lord’s Prayer). Pärt’s contemplative mysticism and Janáček’s dramatic modernism both confront hardship while calling for spiritual and societal renewal.
Bob Chilcott’s Marriage to My Lady of Poverty and Maurice Duruflé’s Ubi Caritas frame the evening’s overarching message: that compassion, justice, and humility remain essential responses to turmoil, poverty, injustice, and doubt. These works underscore the enduring power of communal expression and moral courage.
Guest artist Benton Schmidt will present a pre-concert organ recital and will also perform throughout the program, including in Psalm 90, Rejoice in the Lamb, Otčenáš, and The Beatitudes.
Experience an evening of music that challenges, consoles, and inspires—an invitation to reflect on our shared responsibility and enduring hope.
