An evening devoted to the unmistakable and brilliant voice of American music.
We begin with the bright forward driving energy of Aaron Copeland’s Outdoor
Overture, bursting into life with Copland’s trademark clarity and optimism. That
spirit continues into his Music for Movies where the sound world expands into
something reflective and nostalgic.
After intermission, we arrive at one of the great landmarks of American opera:
George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, presented in concert form. Bringing this world
to life are two exceptional Bay Area artists, soprano Shawnette Sulker and
baritone Bradley Kynard, with the Eureka Symphony Chorus. Together they
inhabit Gershwin’s world with warmth, fire and the kind of immediacy that will
put you right on Catfish Row.
