AT THE MAC

Worthington was founded in 1803 by a group of people with big dreams and aspirations for their new town and the families they brought from hundreds of miles away to start anew. For the last 200 years, Worthington has been home to settlers who braved the frontier, students who were educated at institutions of learning, leaders in political, social and commercial endeavors, and everyday people who have created the community. Streets are lined with buildings spanning eras from the town's founding to more recent, and the architecture too has stories to tell. In this class, Historical Society Director Kate LaLonde will share Worthington's stories, both infamous and lesser told, through pictures.

Kate LaLonde is in her tenth year as the Executive Director at the Worthington Historical Society, where she enjoys researching and sharing the stories of the community. Originally from Westerville, she attended the University of Michigan before coming back to the Columbus area where she lives with her husband and son.

Lucian Freud: A Self Portrait

Friday, April 5, 2024 at 7:00 PM

A MODERN BRITISH MASTER REVEALED

“Looks at the drama of the paintings, and goes into great detail in the company of very learned critics”

The Robert Elms Show, BBC Radio London EXHIBITION ON SCREEN presents Lucian Freud: A Self Portrait. One of the most celebrated British painters of our time, Lucian Freud is also one of very few 20th-century artists who portrayed themselves in self-portraiture with such consistency.

“A well-rounded Study. Art lovers will enjoy the explication of Freud’s working methods, the close-ups of cruddy brushes; while gossip-fanciers will lap up the ‘bad boy’ anecdotes.”

Total Film Magazine Spanning nearly seven decades his self-portraits give a fascinating insight into both his psyche and his development as a painter, from his earliest portrait painted in 1939 to the final one executed 64 years later. This intense and unflinching gaze has produced a body of powerful, figurative works that places him in the forefront of great British painting. Featuring fascinating interviews with past sitters, friends and leading art experts such as Tim Marlow (Artistic Director, Royal Academy of Arts, London) and Martin Gayford (Art Critic and Writer), this intensely compelling documentary reveals the life’s work of a master which, when seen together, represents an engrossing study into the dynamic of ageing and the process of self-representation.

Directed by David Bickerstaff

Running time: 86 minutes

Presented in partnership with the Columbus Museum of Art.

Additional screening Thursday, April 11 at the Columbus Museum of Art

MAC Family Fun Series - You Gotta Meet Mr. Pierce

Saturday, April 13, 2024, 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM

Family Fun Series It's time for some family fun at the MAC! You'll be delighted with our new family series programming, which is geared toward preschool - young elementary-aged kids and their families.

You Gotta Meet Mr. Pierce!: The Storied Life of Folk Artist Elijah Pierce

An exciting presentation featuring authors Chiquita Mullins Lee & Carmella Van Vleet! You Gotta Meet Mr. Pierce is a picture book biography about the barber shop of woodcarver Elijah Pierce, recipient of the highest folk art honor in the United States.

"Creeeeak!" goes the screen door to self-taught artist Elijah Pierce's barbershop art studio. A young boy walks in for an ordinary haircut and walks out having discovered a lifetime of art.

Mr. Pierce's wood carvings are in every corner of the small studio. There are animals, scenes from his life, and those detailing the socio-political world around him. It's this collection of work that will eventually win Elijah the National Heritage Fellowship in 1982 just two years before his death. But the young boy visiting the shop in the 1970s doesn't know that yet. All he knows is: "You gotta meet Mr. Pierce!"

Based on the true story of Elijah Pierce and his community barber shop in Columbus, Ohio, this picture book includes cleverly collaged museum-sourced photos of his art and informative backmatter about his life. With engaging text by Pierce to the Soul! playwright Chiquita Mullins-Lee and Christopher Award-winning author Carmella Van Vleet, it's illustrated with striking Japanese woodblock by Jennifer Mack-Watkins. A new addition to vital Black art history!

With control of the presidency and Congress at stake in a deeply polarized electorate, and the integrity of the electoral process itself under challenge, 2024 is shaping up as one of the most important elections in American history. By the end of April, the Democratic and Republican presidential nominees should have been decided, pending ratification by their summer national conventions. Many of the parties’ candidates for all 435 House seats and the one-third of Senate seats on the ballot in 2024 also will have been chosen. The class will review the outcomes of these nomination contests and how the different rules by party and by state have governed them. Attention then will turn to the prospective general elections for both the presidency and the Congress, including how a third party or independent candidate might affect the presidential outcome. Presidential winners are determined by which candidate wins a majority of votes in the Electoral College, leaving the popular votes in only about a dozen “battleground” states to determine of the outcome. The contrast between the Electoral College and popular votes will be highlighted. By contract, congressional winners typically are determined by popular vote “pluralities.” Finally, how much the challenges to the electoral process and the violence that may accompany them will influence the outcomes and the very state of electoral democracy in America also will be discussed.

Paul A. Beck (1971 PhD, University of Michigan) is currently Professor Emeritus and Academy Professor of Political Science at The Ohio State University and international co-coordinator of the Comparative National Elections Project (u.osu.edu/cnep), which now includes almost 70 national election surveys conducted since 1990 in 31 different countries. He has been the primary investigator of dozens of public opinion polls during his career. Most recently, he co-directed multiple surveys of voters: for Britain and France in their 2017 elections; for the U.S. in its 2020 election, for Ohio in its 2022 primary, and for Brazil in its 2022 election. Over the course his career, Beck has published 9 books and numerous articles in leading professional journals on voting behavior, political parties, and public opinion; has received 5 research grants from the National Science Foundation; and has been a regular commentator on politics in the media and before community and professional groups. He is recipient of the Distinguished Scholar and Distinguished Service awards from Ohio State University and the American Political Science Association’s Goodnow and Eldersveld awards for distinguished service to the profession and career professional contributions to the field of political organizations and parties, respectively. He served as the political science department chair for 19 years at two different universities, 13 at Ohio State, and as dean of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Ohio State.

Growing Up Maasai

Isaya Oleporuo, a Maasai Warrior from a remote village in northern Tanzania, loves to share his culture with others.  In his interactive “Growing up Maasai” program you will learn about this peaceful, kind and sharing people who live in extended-family homes (bomas).  Maasai life has remained largely unchanged for the past several centuries.  The arts and its symbolism is very rich in Maasai culture.  Isaya will show and demonstrate their traditions, dress, beautiful jewelry (available for purchase to help the Maasai women), dance and song.  He will tell about the roles of elders, young men and women in their culture.  Boys learn from fathers about becoming warriors who are guardians of their cows and servant-leaders for their people.  In the past, girls have become wives and mothers at a very young age.  You will also learn about Isaya’s work to rescue young girls from forced childhood marriage and finding sponsors to help them further their education. Isaya Oleporuo is a Maasai Warrior Chief from the remote village of Eluai in northern Tanzania.  He grew up in the traditional family-centered lifestyle that the Maasai have followed for centuries.  As with all boys, he learned to herd and protect cows, which led to becoming a servant-leader among his people.  Isaya did not attend school, but had the opportunity to come to the U.S. in his 20’s.  He obtained his GED, an associate degree in Boston and completed his bachelor’s degree in International Affairs at Ohio State University in 2022/23.  His passion is to help his people and teach others about Maasai culture.  While in Boston, he did many presentations at schools about Maasai culture.  He continues to help support the women in his village by selling traditional beaded jewelry, providing income for their families as the men are away for months finding pasture for the cows.  Isaya has also established Osotuwa Foundation that helps young girls escape childhood marriage, with sponsorships enabling them to further their educations.  He began this work approximately 8 years ago with nearly 200 girls now having hope for a future of their own.
