Learn to paint with this beautifully unpredictable medium by mastering essential supplies, foundational techniques, and understanding the magic of letting the water do the work. This is an educational, technical course designed for those who want to really understand how to paint with this particular medium and grow their skills. You'll leave with: a solid foundation in watercolor fundamentals like brush handling, water management, painting planning, and how to work wet-into-wet. Ages 13+

The Wednesday Morning Figure Co-op offers the opportunity to work from life with experienced nude figure models. Co-op members with diverse levels of artistic background bring drawing or painting materials of their choice and work independently in a relaxed, collegial atmosphere. Easels, workbenches and tables are provided. No critique or instruction is provided. A model fee of $10 is collected at each three-hour session. If work-space permits, those enrolled in any of the three drawing and painting co-ops (Wednesday morning figure, Thursday evening figure, Friday morning portrait) are welcome to attend the other two studio co-ops, paying the model fee for sessions they attend. Want to learn to draw? This class is intended for beginners who want to learn the basics of drawing. Students will explore all aspects of drawing with a concentration on still life. Small class sizes allow lots of individual attention and direction. This course can be retaken for those who want to continue to sharpen their skills. No class on 9/30.
Supplies: drawing paper and pencils are available for use, but students are welcome to bring their own as well.

Nature is often the best teacher, especially when it comes to drawing and painting. This class uses live plants, flowers, fruits, and vegetables as still life subjects to teach observational drawing skills. We will explore drawing materials and wet media including but not limited to: graphite, charcoal, watercolor, and illustration markers. This class includes one day of off-site drawing (location TBD) where we meet to draw from nature locally. This is a companion class to The Artist's Toolkit, but can be taken separately. The Thursday Evening (plus one Sunday) Figure Co-op offers artists with daytime commitments the opportunity to study from life, working with experienced nude figure models. No critique or instruction is provided. Co-op artists with diverse levels of artistic backgrounds bring drawing or painting materials of their choice and the ability to work independently in a relaxed, collegial atmosphere. Easels, work benches and tables are provided. Three-hour sessions begin with a few gesture poses followed by one long pose for concentrated study. Occasionally the artist group decides to vary the routine with a two week pose or multiple figure composition. This session includes registration in the Sunday afternoon Gesture session. A model fee of $10 is collected at each session for 3 hours of work with experienced figure models. If work-space permits, those enrolled in any of the three Maryland Hall drawing/painting co-ops (Wednesday morning figure/Thursday evening figure/Friday morning portrait) are welcome to attend sessions of the other two co-ops by paying the model fee for sessions they attend, but artists should register for the Co-op they intend to use the most. *High school artists 16 and older with life drawing experience are allowed to participate in this session with the following requirements:

In this class students will create a drawing from a photo reference provided by Nicole. We will begin with an overview of materials and the working process followed with a short lecture and demonstration of how Nicole Troup draws a portrait in charcoal using children's proportions of various ages. Instruction and demos will be given throughout the workshop with an emphasis placed on: proportions and the differences between child and adult, blocking in the lights and shadows, value relationships, shading, blending, drawing/charcoal techniques, use of edges, details and more.
Students will use the method of relative sizing to transcribe their photograph to their paper. Class discussions will include: student feedback to progress their work, the advantages and pitfalls of using photo references for drawing and how to accurately judge values, soft and hard edges and forms within your photo.

This class will focus on teaching students the fundamentals of landscape painting, the importance and use of design, composition, perspective, and color. Focus will also be on painting in the studio from photographic reference using oil paints. Advanced students will learn to create larger finished work based on plein air studies. A totally great time that may result in mild side effects such as newfound opinions about color theory, emotional attachment to paintbrushes, and a suspicious interest in berets. Inspired by artists who have already done it—or some who are still in the process—we’ll look at their interesting lives and works. Then, using their stories and examples, create new, personal “inspired-by” artwork of our own. You’ll hear a little art history, maybe a funny anecdote or two, and get into the “why” behind the work—the stuff that makes it matter. It’s less about technical perfection and more about clarity of message. In the words of Mark Rothko, “There is no such thing as a good painting about nothing.” No prior experience necessary. All are welcome, because creativity belongs to everyone and we intend to prove it (while having a lot of fun doing it). Each workshopper will leave with a finished acrylic painting.
