PERFORMING ARTS CLASSES FOR CHILDREN AND ADULTS

**School Year 2022 - 2023**

The following classes are offered at Ocala Civic Theatre.  Students participating on site must have a Covid-19 Liability Waiver signed by a guardian. Class size is strictly limited to 15 students – early registration is strongly suggested.  Classes are held indoor and outdoor. Students are also encouraged to dress comfortably with sneakers and bring a refillable water bottle.  CDC guidelines for youth and theatre programming are followed.  For more details, please contact the Director of Education at 352-236-2851 ext 107.

Actors of all experience levels will develop their skills in physical and emotional character development through the exploration of acting techniques, theatre exercises, drama games, scene/monologue work, and/or improvisation. Through independent, partner, and small group work, learners will develop greater self-confidence while also increasing their respect for community and their understanding of the work and fun of acting.

The Oddest Sea: Greek Gods and Giggles

C.A.S.T. once again graces the mainstage this spring with our smash-hit performance and literacy outreach project! Work with Director of Education Terry LeCompte as an ultimate Theatre for Young Audiences ensemble. Create and perform a collection of timeless folktales from our global community that take our audiences on an expedition for understanding and appreciation of the things that connect us to one another. Lit Lore will be presented as a weekday performance for elementary schools on Friday, March 31. Please note: All students cast must be available for ALL performances.

AUDITIONS: Thursday, January 5 at 5:00 p.m. (register today to hold your audition spot with a refundable $10 deposit. You must attend auditions.)  Actors should prepare a one-minute monologue and come dressed to move.

OCT’s Performing Arts Club is specially made for our community’s non-traditional learners. Once a week, join other creative youth to explore theatre arts in a nurturing and fun community at our theatre. Open to all levels of experience, objectives of the programming include strengthening of creative problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills (verbal, nonverbal, and written). The PAC’s projects are designed specifically for the community of learners enrolled. The engaging hands-on programming includes a playful combination of all-in theatre games, improvisation, character and story development, writing, and scene and monologue practice.

Spend Wednesday evenings exploring the group’s theatrical areas of interest with guest workshop leaders. Upon registering, you will receive a short survey to help us understand what kinds of classes everyone is most interested in. Potential workshops include scene study, monologue or song prep, script analysis, effects makeup, yoga, stage combat, playwriting, mask work, improv, and more. Workshop leaders will consist of local talent and visiting artists when available.

We will travel through space and time by exploring some well-known stories of today while tracing them back to their origins. Most Disney stories originate in international folklore and fairytales, while superheroes in comic books are considered modern mythology. Stories throughout the ages have captured our imagination. Look at them in a fun and playful new way – through acting, singing, and dancing!

This new musical theatre workshop is for serious artists looking to strengthen their skills in ensemble singing and dancing while also working on their personal audition repertoire. Across the 10 weeks, students will develop group numbers with harmonies and choreography with directors, music directors, and choreographers. Every third session, students will work on individual songs for their songbook, receiving extra coaching for vocal, acting, and audition techniques. This course is for students serious about learning and practicing their music at home between classes. Interviews and/or auditions are required at the discretion of the Director of Education.

Students who meet the age requirement for OCT's season closer, Newsies, will still have the option to skip ahead in the audition process, joining at the callback level.

This popular series for our youngest friends gets an exciting twist this school year! Youth and their grownups will learn and practice aspects of theatre arts while exploring different worlds. Make new friends, hear new stories, and learn new things from children’s literature and international folktales through engaging, fun, and diverse storytelling styles, including movement, music, and visual arts.

A Family Component

*Three times during the term (1/27, 2/17 & 3/10), an adult family member of each youth will join the class for a fun and engaging multi-generation exploration of stories!
