Learn the history of Bonsai, several popular styles of trees, and how to turn a hand selected nursery plant into a bonsai tree of your own. DIRECTORS WORKSHOP

Have you ever wanted to direct but don’t know where to start? This is the workshop for you! Each participant will be assigned a 10 minute play from the series “Get in the Car” written by local talents in Buffalo. Matt Boyle will walk you through the nuances of directing and how to stage a short play. Hosted by Matt Boyle. 

Exploring Ancient Allegany: Off the Beaten Track Photography & Hiking Adventures

May 17th, 7am-4pm, $95 to register

This hike is a guided wilderness bushwhack through some of Allegany's mostly unknown and seldom visited old growth forests, a couple of which are among the largest remaining intact ancient forests in the Northeast. Amble through enchanting landscapes where you’ll see some of the largest and tallest trees in the region, picturesque mossy-bouldered creeks featuring many small waterfalls, intriguing root formations and much more. These areas are unique and wondrous, a world left to it's own devices, largely unaltered by man.

Fantastic Franklin Gulf: Off the Beaten Track Photography & Hiking Adventures

A guided tour through Erie County’s Franklin Gulf Park’s scenic highlights as seen through the eyes of professional photographer David Reade. This excursion will feature gorgeous views, beautiful creek vistas with plentiful picturesque small waterfalls; and impressive old-growth trees.

GLASS PAINTED PORTRAITS

Create a fun and interesting portrait on glass using translucent paint medium. Participants will bring a reference image that they would like to create. Frames and all supplies provided.

GROWING NATIVE HERBS

March 15th, 10am-12:30pm, $20 / $15 members, Art’s Cafe

Have you ever planted seeds and had nothing sprout? Many perennial and native seeds require special treatment to germinate. In this beginner-friendly class, Sarah Sorci of Sweet Flag Herbs will spotlight her favorite culinary and medicinal native herbs for the garden. She will guide you through their cultivation, and we'll discuss delicious and safe uses of each species. Each participant will practice seed scarification and cold-moist stratification and take home prepared seeds for spring planting (rose mallow and nodding onion).

GYOTAKU: JAPANESE FISH PRINTS

April 10th, 2:30-5pm, $45 / $40 members, SCA

Gyotaku is the traditional Japanese method of printing fish, used by fishermen to record their catches. In this class, we will use latex molds of a variety of sea creatures and plants as our printing plates. With Janet Vedder.

HANDMADE SEED PAPER: CRAFT & PLANT FOR SPRING

Welcome spring with creativity and sustainability! Join Mary Hermans of Nexus Botanical Arts for a hands-on seed paper making workshop where you’ll transform recycled paper into beautiful, plantable creations. Learn how to blend, shape, and embed wildflower seeds into custom sheets, perfect for cards, gift tags, or planting in your garden. Attendees will leave with 3-5 sheets of handmade seed paper and DIY instructions to continue the craft at home.

ICE & SNOW DYEING 

February 1st, 10-11:30am, $25 / $20 members, Art’s Cafe

Discover the magic of transforming winter’s chill into wearable art! In this hands-on workshop, Mary Hermans of Nexus Botanical Arts will guide you through the process of using snow or ice as a dye medium, paired with natural plant-based pigments. You’ll create your own unique bandana to take home while learning the fundamentals of this truly cool technique. All materials provided.

LEARN TO WEAVE

May 10th, 10am-2pm, $75 / $65 members, Vacanti Classroom

In this full 4-hour workshop, learn weaving basics and get a taste for modern fiber art. You'll work with a pre-selected palette and materials and a pre-warped frame loom and learn how to weave. Instruction will include weaving time as well as tips and tricks for finishing and hanging your work. Students will leave with beginners weaving knowledge, and a completed fiber art piece. Loom not required: Use of 12x16 Lost Pond Looms student loom and tools set provided for use in class. Loom available a la carte upon request. With Tami Fuller.

LINOLEUM PRINTED TEA TOWELS

Learn the process, safety and technique of printmaking with linoleum. Carve your own design that can be used to print on tea towels, shopping bags, pillowcases and more. White tea towels will be provided for printing in class.

MANIFESTATION & VISION BOARD

Need a little help formulating your plan and defining goals for 2025? This class will provide you with a fun foundation to help you clear the way to achieving your vision this year by creating your own usable vision board using a variety of materials.

MARKET BASKET: TWO PART WORKSHOP

In this two-part workshop, create a medium size handled basket that is perfect for the farmers market or storing things at home. Participants should plan to bring an old towel, bucket, tape measure, straight end screwdriver, and sharp scissors. With Ellen McCarthy.

MORTAR SCULPTING

February 6th, 6-8pm, $35 / $30 members, Art’s Cafe

A laidback workshop where you’ll get a chance to unleash your inner creativity by sculpting a piece of art from your own block of concrete and marble dust. There won’t be any chiseling or grinding; the block will be in the process of hardening, so you’ll have a small window of time to create that masterpiece. Block sizes will be around 6x8x10”. No sculpting knowledge or artistic skill level required- just an active imagination. All tools, materials and gloves will be provided. With Brian Pfeiffer. 

MUSICAL THEATER DANCE CLASS

This is an introductory dance workshop for theater lovers! With soundtracks “All That Jazz” and “Cell Block Tango” from the hit musical Chicago, participants will learn contrasting jazz dance styles, exploring the distinction between subtle and sharp sensuality. Needle Felted March Hares

Learn to sculpt with wool. In this beginners 3D needle felt class students will use a special felting needle and superfine wool to sculpt a handheld March Hare as a perfect introduction to needle felting figures and a celebration of Spring. With Tami Fuller.

PAINTING EXERCISES: THREE PART WORKSHOP

April 19th & April 26th & May 3rd, 9:30am-Noon, $85 / $75 members, Vacanti Classroom 

This three-part painting workshop will set the groundwork for better paintings over time. Geared for intermediate students, the focus will be the planning and design steps that result in more masterful paintings. The lessons will emphasize where and how you put paint down, shapes used, values arranged, and colors selected. The aim will not be on a single wonderful painting but rather smaller size paintings that allow for easy corrections. Participants will select their own media and subject matter to work with. VOCAL HEALTH WORKSHOP

March 15th, 10-11am, $25 / $20 members, SCA

This interactive workshop will guide participants through a warm-up routine addressing proper posture, breathing, intonation, vowels, resonance, and character that can be used daily to improve and sustain good vocal health. The class will open with a discussion on vocal cord function, and the proper habits/behaviors that go into sustaining life long vocal hygiene. Participants will work through a common popular song as a group while applying these ideas/techniques. At the end, each member will leave with a deeper understanding of their own voice and how to use it efficiently without strain, tension, or fatigue. Please come hydrated and ready to sing!
