Cabaret is an intimate musical art form, in which a performer puts his or her personal stamp on a song through an honest exploration of the lyrics. Students do not need to know how to read music, nor do they need to have taken voice lessons or studied acting. That said, professionals from other theatrical and musical genres who are interested in exploring the unique art form of cabaret are welcome!
The teaching structure is to have a group class once a week, for six weeks. The class length to be determined by the number of students who enroll (we want to give each student 20 minutes of stage time each session so we are limiting the class to eight singers). We are scheduled for Monday nights from 6:30-9:30, February
10th , 17th , 24th , March 2nd , 9th , 16th .
Each student will bring, to the classes, sheet music to 3-5 songs s/he knows well and wants to sing. In a non-threatening and supportive environment, the student will sing through his/her repertoire, working on the interpretation of lyrics; phrasing and musicality; acting/presentation; and making songs his/her own. By March 2nd, she/he will choose 2-3 songs to prepare for the class show.
The workshop will culminate with each student having 2-3 songs prepared to performance level, including devising patter to introduce the songs. There will be a group show on March 23 rd . Dress rehearsal is scheduled for Sunday, March 22nd
