Students will engage in a variety of activities that encourage creativity, confidence, and collaboration while gaining the foundational dance and vocal skills necessary to be a successful musical theatre performer. Students participate in a short year-end showcase for family and friends. DURATION: 3.5 hours training weekly (plus 30 minute lunch break) Tuition: $499 (Incl. 26 class dates) COURSE 1of3: YOUTH DRAMA CLASS FOR HOMESCHOOLERS WITH PERFORMANCE FOCUS Class Description: This performance-focused drama class teaches students how to bring a piece of classic literature to life on the stage. Students are assigned a piece of material to study, which is then discussed. Once the students are familiar with the story, they are given playscripts of the same title and assigned a character to work on. From there, weekly instruction includes learning how to create believable characters, and how to move with confidence and commitment on stage in front of an audience. Students also share the responsibility of creating some of their own props and costumes. The class session concludes with a fully realized theatrical production on stage produced by youth for youth. This class is designed to inspire and empower young performers, allowing them to express themselves through the art of drama. Curriculum highlights: • Performance Projects: Students learn collaboration skills while working as a creative team to produce a play from start to finish. • Improvisation: Students participate in weekly improvisation exercises designed to boost spontaneity and build confidence by learning to “think on the feet”. • Feedback and Growth: Students receive weekly instructive feedback from professionals designed to help refine performance skills and foster a safe space for creative play and thinking. • Taught by experienced drama teachers with extensive knowledge of live performance and technical theatre. Acting techniques introduced include Stanislavski, Meisner, etc. • Focus and scene study on classic literature, reading, and comprehension • Skill Building: Learn and enhance acting techniques, voice projection and public speaking, character development, stage presence, and/or receive hands-on training in technical theatre areas such as set & costume design, stage lighting, and stage management. COURSE 2of3: MUSIC APPRECIATION & YOUTH CHOIR CLASS DURATION: 1 HOUR WEEKLY CLASS DESCRIPTION: In this class, students will learn how to read and understand music “on the page”, learn vocal technique and proper breathing, and hone harmonization skills. The students will explore a variety of musical genres, from classical to contemporary, in an effort to encourage self-expression and a love for music. Curriculum Highlights: • Warm-Up exercises: Fun vocal exercises to improve range and clarity on a weekly basis. • Song Selection: Diverse musical styles are chosen to inspire and challenge singers. • Group Dynamics: In addition to blending voices, youth choir requires teamwork helping to build a sense of community. This helps young people build confidence and promotes stage presence. • Performance preparation: This class places an emphasis on providing a birds eye view of what it takes to get from “page to stage”. Students receive training for how best to present themselves when in front of an audience. • Musical Theory Basics: Introduction to reading music and understanding rhythms. COURSE 3of3: YOUTH HIP-HOP/FITNESS INSTRUCTION DURATION: 1 HOUR WEEKLY CLASS DESCRIPTION: For young dancers of all skill levels, this immersive dance training explores various styles within the dance genre while developing each student’s sense of rhythm, coordination, and creativity. Curriculum Highlights: • Classes are led by experienced instructors with a passion for hip hop and rhythm focused dance styles. • Students are taught the importance of warm-up and stretching exercises before choreography begins. • Students are introduced to choreography technique and how each individual dancer is important regardless of role or where they are positioned on the stage. • Creative exploration is at the core of this class. Hip Hop dance naturally celebrates individual style and self-expression. Though teamwork is most important, we encourage the introduction of creative ideas that benefit the whole. • Two annual showcases are held on stage to allow the students an opportunity to use the skills they’ve learned and boost self confidence by performing in front of family and friends.
