Indie Boot Camp

Are you a performer on an indie team looking to get some extra reps onstage? Join Union Comedy instructors from 10am-12pm on Sundays for INDIE BOOT CAMP. We’ll break into mixer teams, run some exercises and perform a couple “sets” for each other.

Ben Scurria is a performer, teacher, and coach of Improv with over 20 years of experience. As a member of the Improvboston National Touring Company, Ben performs and teaches workshops all over the continental United States. He is excited to get back to doing things in the real world!

Level 1: Foundation of the Scene

Union Comedy's entry-level course introduces students to the skills and techniques that are most essential to a successful longform improv scene. Students will learn the value of making decisive and active choices, embracing and utilizing the choices of their scene partners, and working together to create something fun, funny, and unique out of practically nothing. No prior experience necessary.

Instructor Bio:

Ben is an experienced improv performer, coach and instructor, with a focus in scenic, game-based long form improv. He has played for and coached many teams at ImprovBoston’s Harold Night and is a founding member of independent mainstay Naffy. Ben has over 5 years experience teaching improv in a classroom setting, and is excited to be teaching at Union Comedy.

Level 2: Scene Development w/ Pat Kearnan Thursdays 7-9:30pm 1/6-2/24 14 13

Level 2: Scene Development

The second course in our core curriculum takes a more focused look at 2-person scenes with an emphasis on character. Students will learn how to make instinctive choices, unpack information, and define their character's worldview. This is supported by exploring comedic ideas through tags and expanding patterns to create satisfying scenic montages.

Prerequisite:

Instructor Bio:

Pat Kearnan has been performing and teaching improv since 2012, most prominently on the ImprovBoston team NEIGHBORS, the long-running western-themed Oregon Fail, and his musical narrative duo Sophie: The Musical. You can catch him performing at The Pickle on Saturdays at 9pm. He is one of the Founders of Union Comedy.

Crash Course: Where It Happens w/ John Serpico Sat 1/15 2-5pm, 6pm Show 8 8

Crash Course

This small performance-oriented workshop puts you on a whirlwind one-day introduction to a specific type of show. You'll be joining an 8-person team, learning the ins and outs of the show in a jam-packed 3 hours, and then performing it in front of a live audience. Prior improv experience required.

This week's show: Where It Happens

Where It Happens is a long-form improv format that invites performers to create a place and then explore that place over the course of the show. Performers may build a corner store and see fifty years worth of its history, or an inflatable bouncy castle over the course of a birthday party, or a spaceship hurtling through the cosmos for a millenia. As the performers learn the format, they'll be challenged to sharpen their physical improv skills and engage in scenework that is as meaningful as it is funny!

Instructor Bio:

John Serpico has been performing, directing and teaching improvisation since 2005. Based in Boston, John has worked as an instructor in the ImprovBoston Comedy School, for teams across New England, and at improv festivals throughout the country. His focus as a teacher is on developing skills that make scenes and characters real, honest and funny.
