Transfixed!
When you’re magic, you can change all the rules.
Transfixed! takes place in a magical realm where wizards, witches, sorcerers, and unknown mystical creatures live with reckless abandon. In a nearby world, human beings extinguish any signs of magic in favor of normalcy and predictability. Young magicals and young humans alike struggle for control of their lives and the very rules of reality, all while navigating the pressures of growing up. In this tale of magic, coming of age, and rebellion, expect spell-casting, potion-making, and shape-shifting.
The process of making this piece will be highly collaborative and the final piece will be devised by the ensemble. Our cast writers will respond to the ensemble’s impulses and source material such as A Wizard of Earthsea, Little Witch Academia, The Worst Witch and more. In dialogue with the vibrant magical worlds of Young Adult literature and our own imaginations, we will be both inspired by and clap back at the archetypes, plot lines, and authors that make up this compelling genre (including a magical series we once loved, written by an author who now vehemently oppose our values or our very existence).
The process will include improvisation games, lip syncing, expressive movement exercises, and extensive ensemble work. We will also have a playwriting ensemble who will support the development of the piece in a responsive manner.
This theatrical extravaganza will include dance, drag, clown, puppetry, mask work, comedic dialogue, melodrama, circus arts and more. We welcome multidisciplinary artists and writers/performers ages 10-19 to bring their magic to the Tranfixed! ensemble.
