Let the Sunshine In (Un Beau Soleil Interieur)

Friday, Jun 22, 7:30 pm
Sunday, Jun 24, 5:30 pm
Monday, Jun 25, 7:30 pm

Juliette Binoche delivers a luminous performance in the deliciously witty, sensuously romantic new film from acclaimed director Claire Denis. Isabelle is a divorced Parisian painter searching for another shot at love, but refusing to settle for the parade of all-too-flawed men who drift in and out of her life. There's a caddish banker who, like many of her lovers, happens to be married; a handsome actor who's working through his own hang-ups; and a sensitive fellow artist who's skittish about commitment. What reads like a standard romantic comedy premise is transformed, in the hands of master filmmaker Denis, into something altogether deeper, more poignant, and perceptive about the profound mysteries of love.

Directed By: Claire Denis

Cast: Juliette Binoche, Gerard Depardieu, Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, Nicolas Duvanuchelle, Josiane Balasko, and Clair Tran.

"Let the Sunshine In pairs a powerful performance from Juliette Binoche with a layered drama that presents director Claire Denis at her most assured." - Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes

Bebel Gilberto

returns to the Lincoln on Saturday, July 21 at 7:30pm

Ms. Gilberto has recently started performing intimate versions of her songs live and has been delighted by the audience response. Perhaps more remarkable has been her own experience with her new album Bebel Gilberto Live at the Belly Up : “I feel completely naked listening to such untouched live tracks,” says the singer. “Recording some of my favorite songs wrapped only with acoustic guitar has shown me how unique these moments can be.” As for covering of the Radiohead song Creep, Bebel has always had a broad taste for pop music, from Prince to David Bowie to Bjork, but recording and performing this song has been a particularly profound experience. “It’s a very truthful version for me, and it only came after many late nights of singing the song alone.”

Bebel Gilberto Live at the Belly Up captures a very special, intimate performance featuring the sultry Brazilian singer and and her long-time guitarist Masa Shimizu on guitar, performing some of her fans’ favorite songs rearranged for this special show. The recording also features Bebel’s own interpretation of Preciso Dizer que Te Amo, a song she originally wrote and recorded with fellow Brazilian singer Cazuza, a close friend of hers until his death from AIDS related causes in 1990. The song first appeared as a duet between the two artists on Red Hot & Rio in 1996.

Hailing from a rich musical lineage, Bebel is the is the daughter of João Gilberto and singer Miúcha, and grew up surrounded by her extended musically family, including her uncle Chico Buarque and family friends like Milton Nascimento, Tom Jobim, Caetano Veloso, and João Donato.

Although she has been making music all her life, Bebel Gilberto had her first major breakthrough as a solo artist with her highly acclaimed release Tanto Tempo in 2000, introducing her now-trademark blend of electronic bossa nova and positioning her as one of the top-selling Brazilian artists in the U.S. She has has released five albums in the last 16 years, all Grammy-nominated, and all of them reflecting a life growing up with one foot in Brazil and the other New York City, infusing a modern, cosmopolitan edge to her music. She continues to call New York City home to this day.

The Historic Lincoln Theatre presents

Leo Kottke

on Wednesday, July 25, 2018

Acoustic guitarist Leo Kottke was born in Athens, Georgia, but left town after a year and a half. Raised in 12 different states, he absorbed a variety of musical influences as a child, flirting with both violin and trombone, before abandoning Stravinsky for the guitar at age 11.

After adding a love for the country-blues of Mississippi John Hurt to the music of John Phillip Sousa and Preston Epps, Kottke joined the Navy underage, to be underwater, and eventually lost some hearing shooting at lightbulbs in the Atlantic while serving on the USS Halfbeak, a diesel submarine.

Kottke has been awarded two Grammy nominations; a Doctorate in Music Performance by the Peck School of Music at the U of Wisconsin, Milwaukee; and a Certificate of Significant Achievement in Not Playing the Trombone from the U of Texas at Brownsville with Texas Southmost College.

Five Time Grammy Winner

Robert Cray

returns to the Lincoln on Tuesday, July 31 at 7:30pm.

The Lincoln Theatre is thrilled to welcome back Robert Cray and put our new audio system to the test! Special Thanks to all who have donated to our Sound + Hearing Campaign!

Robert Cray has been bridging the lines between blues, soul and R&B for the past four decades, with five grammy wins and over 20 acclaimed albums! “In the early days of the band we were paying attention to my favorite blues players; Buddy Guy, Otis Rush, Albert King and especially Albert Collins,” Cray says.

With the 1986 release of Strong Persuader the Robert Cray Band’s tunes were put in heavy rotation on mega rock stations across the nation. The first hit, “Smoking Gun,” was followed by “I Guess I Showed Her” & “Right Next Door (Because Of Me).”

Following the path of fame taken by blues-based rockers like Johnny Winter & Stevie Ray Vaughan, Cray became a sensation, leading his band in concerts at large arenas and rock festivals.

Eric Clapton’s admiration for Cray led to a writing collaboration on the hit “Old Love,” which featured Cray on guitar. Cray performs “Brown Eyed Handsome Man” with Chuck Berry in the film “Hail! Hail! Rock ‘N’ Roll.”

During the 90s the Robert Cray Band was featured in concert with artists like Eric Clapton, the Rolling Stones, John Lee Hooker, BB King and Bonnie Raitt, who declared that the band leader (Cray) is “an original; he’s passionate, he’s a bad ass and puts on one of the best shows you’ll ever see.”
