An Evening Wasted with Tom Lehrer's Music

by Tom Lehrer
compiled by Andrew Pinard

March 22 - 31

Poisoning Pigeons in the Park, The Masochism Tango, Smut, The Vatican Rag, and My Home Town are just a few of the songs Tom Lehrer wrote and performed in recordings and live concerts to great acclaim.

Lehrer has strong connections to New England - he lived in Cambridge for many years and went to summer camp in Maine (Camp Androscoggin) along with another ne'er do well, Stephen Sondheim. There he was both a camper and a counselor.

He also went to Harvard, taught at MIT, and later at the University of California, Santa Cruz (where he lives now mostly having abandoned the East Coast).

None of this is remotely as interesting as the fact that he wrote and performed ""Silent E"" for the children's television program The Electric Company which starred (in part) Rita Moreno and Morgan Freeman.

In 1980, his songs and words were collected by Cameron Mackintosh in the form of a review show. No one knows what happened to Mackintosh (he was presumable eaten by cats). Other than using the words and songs of Tom Lehrer, this musical review (with words and songs) bears absolutely no similarities with the words and songs pulled together by Mackintosh (except, perhaps, some of the words and songs).

If this is your first introduction to the music of Tom Lehrer, we offer you our most profound apologies. Perhaps it might inspire you to go explore Tom Lehrer on your own. It is reported that many of his performances are available on some online viewing platform.

Tom Lehrer has granted permission for us to perform these pieces, but takes no responsibility for the quality or composition. "You bought the ticket; you own it."

NOTE: This production contains adult themes, satire,  and nostalgia for what some of the older folks might refer to as "the good old days". And singing. Not so much dancing though.

Duration is approximately 90 minutes plus an obligatory intermission to encourage you to buy concessions.

Produced by Hatbox Theatre.

A Time to Gather Stones

by George Kelly

April 5 - 21

You are summoned to witness the trial of Joseph Le page, the accused killer of Josie Langmaid, who was assaulted, raped, murdered, and dismembered, on November 25, 1875, as she was walking to school on Academy Road, in Pembroke, New Hampshire. This heinous crime places Le Page, a Canadian itinerant woodcutter, in an American courtroom. The Concord Monitor-Patriot, as well as newspapers up and down the East Coast have been offering conflicting opinions as to Le Page's guilt or innocence. The murder and the impending trial have produced a frenzy of emotions that threaten to throw the populace into a mob intent on revenge. Against this backdrop, Attorneys Norris for the Defense, and Swenson for the Prosecution, duel inside the courtroom. Everyone in the community has been affected by this grisly murder, as Blind Justice weighs Le Page's guilt or innocence and threatens to fracture the community. A Time to Gather Stones, is an historical fictional account of the actual event. Some descriptive language describing the murder may not be suitable for children.

NOTE: This production contains graphic language regarding the violence associated with a murder.

Duration is approximately 120 minutes.

Produced by Granite Playwrights.

Into The Breeches!

Into the Breeches by George Brant, is a surprisingly modern and moving comedy about the singular way art and community reveal our boldest selves even in the darkest times.

It’s WWII and the Oberon Play House’s director and leading men are off at war with the Axis. Determined to press on, the director's wife sets out to produce an all-female version of Shakespeare's Henriad, assembling an increasingly unexpected team united in desire, if not actual theatre experience. Opening Night Mutiny! A Fiasco in Two Acts

by Michael Freitag and Alex Bickerstaff

July 19 - 28

"What can you say about a play which not only goes off the rails- but was designed from its very conception to go off the rails, then stay off the rails, and then cast itself into the abyss beside the rails with the alacrity and ponderous grace of a Steinway concert grand piano flung by a trebuchet? Apparently quite a bit." -Caught in the Act

Welcome to the South Shore Playhouse! Where our "Delectable Cast of Crazies" are trying to premiere their new season despite some small, tiny, miniscule setbacks like:

  • Firing the lead in the middle of dress rehearsal,
  • Replacing them with an understudy who's been studying the wrong script,
  • Rewriting that script behind the playwright's back, and
  • Being caught in the act hours before the show opens.

This series of escalating hi-jinks results in the outraged author pulling the rights to the show... AS the curtain rises. What follows next is the most daring attempt at "The show must go on" in theatrical history, as the group tries to fall back on a half-written script with the same name. Just a couple problems: nobody's rehearsed it, it takes place on Mars, and the idiot who wrote it is sitting in the front row...

"Break legs! ALL OF THEM."

NOTE: This production contains adult language.

Duration is approximately 90 minutes plus one intermission.

Cruel Intentions: The ‘90s Musical

by Lindsey Rosin, Jordan Ross, Roger Kumble

August 2 - 11

Cruel Intentions is a new musical based on the original movie which was based on the famous French novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses. While the 1999 film was set in at the end of the '90s it has many of the same aspects of the original subject material. It brings us to the summer months before school is back in session and thrusts us into the world of wealthy manipulative Manhattan socialites. What makes it unique is that they are high schoolers that are playing games with their fellow classmates. The show has many themes that play into the vision. Love. Destruction. Revenge. Regret and above all consequences. The rule to this game between the pair of charmingly diabolical step siblings is to never fall in love.

NOTE: This production contains adult language, sexual themes, undertones of charged sensuality, and brief partial nudity in one scene.

Duration is approximately 90 minutes plus one intermission.

Produced by Actors Coop Theatre (ACT).
