GEE'S BEND
By Elyzabeth Gregory Wilder
Directed by donnie l. betts
January 31 – February 23, 2025
Aurora Fox Mainstage Theatre
Building on a tradition brought to the Fox stage with the 2024 production of AUGUST WILSON'S GEM OF THE OCEAN, GEE’S BEND tells the powerful story of a family of quilters from the isolated town of Gee’s Bend, Alabama. Spanning the years 1939, 1965, and 2002, the play follows Sadie and her family as they confront the struggles of segregation, household conflict, and the Civil Rights movement. Throughout their journey, the women’s extraordinary quilts provide comfort, a creative outlet, and ultimately, a source of empowerment. Gospel songs weave in and out of this hauntingly beautiful work.
As we work with the estate of August Wilson to secure the performance rights to the remaining nine parts of his seminal American Century Cycle, we proudly offer this inspiring story honoring the history of Black Americans to further the conversation Wilson began with his ten 20th century dramatic plays.
(Producer's Note: We will resume the American Century Cycle once we have coordinated fully with the Wilson estate to establish a comprehensive schedule for the productions. JOE TURNER'S COME AND GONE will remain next on that list, and our commitment to producing the entire cycle remains steadfast.)
