TheSamish Indian Nation presents the documentary film,

Maiden of Deception Pass:

Guardian of Her Samish People

Thursday, August 20 for two screenings at 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm.

Long ago, a maiden named Ko-kwahl-alwoot risked her live to save the Samish people from starvation. She did so by agreeing to marry a man of the sea, who threatened to take the plentiful sea life away from the area if she did not. Her reluctant father demanded that Ko-kwahl-alwoot return annually. It became increasingly difficult for her to return to the village, so today, Ko-kwahl-alwoot lives eternally underwater.

The $10 admission for this event will benefit the Friends of the San Juan Islands efforts to have the Salish Sea officially designated as a PSSA (Particularly Sensitive Sea Area) by the International Maritime Organization. IF approved it would be the third such designation in the United States, the other two being the Florida Keys and the Hawaiian islands. This designation places stricter guidelines on boating traffic in order to protect the waters.
