Whiteside Live: Corey Harris Blues Guitar w/ Clara Baker

March 13th, 2020 @7pm

Corey Harris has earned substantial critical acclaim as one of the few contemporary bluesmen able to channel the raw, direct emotion of acoustic Delta blues without coming off as an authenticity-obsessed historian. Along with Keb’ Mo’ and Alvin “Youngblood” Hart, he raised the flag of acoustic guitar blues in the mid-1990s. Although well versed in the early history of blues guitar, he’s no well-mannered preservationist, mixing a considerable variety of influences – from New Orleans to the Caribbean to Africa – into his richly expressive music.

Clara Baker will be opening for Corey. Clara Baker is an indie-Americana songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and aspiring producer from Portland, OR. Her sophomore release, Things To Burn (2019), was recorded live to tape in a Wisconsin living room with Grammy-winning engineer Brian Joseph (Sufjan Stevens, Bon Iver) and avant-folk experimentalist Shane Leonard. Atwood Magazine called it “soul-stirring”, and East Portland Blog called it a “must-hear… destined to be one of the best albums of 2019.” Clara won 4th place at the 2019 Telluride Troubadour Competition, and also plays fiddle and guitar in Portland-based trio Five Letter Word.
