A Visit to Vienna
Saturday, November 21, 2020 7:30 PM
Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra
with conductor Shokrukh Sadikov
Oleksa Mycyk, cello
Our musical adventure continues as we visit the musical city of Vienna. Our concert is made extra special as we share the debuts of two exceptional artists. Conductor Shah Sadikov takes the podium to lead the SSO through music rooted deep in Vienna, and Saskatoon’s own Oleksa Mycyk makes his concerto debut in Haydn’s effervescent Cello Concerto in C Major.
Brahms spent much of his life in Vienna soaking in the sounds and the culture around him (not to mention the coffee!). His Variations on a Theme by Haydn is known as one of the most stunning orchestral works ever written – a tribute to a master, the work shows the genius of Brahms’ musical abilities.
The evening opens with the Sinfonia in C Major by Marianna Martines. A composer who’s history has all but been erased, Martines’ is one of the most influential and significant female figures in the history of music in Vienna. Much of Martines’ music has been lost; what remains is a testament of a brilliant music voice. While this is the first time the work has ever been played by the SSO, we can’t wait for you to it this fresh, energetic, burst of music that will become a new favourite!
