Lamentations

The exquisite beauty of mournful expression dominates early vocal music. From the death of a royal patron to the crucifixion of Christ, composers enveloped the poetry with sounds intended to reach celestial ears. The music simultaneously inspired as well as comforted and provided a sanctuary from the grief.

This sanctuary is very much needed now as we struggle to rebuild and progress after the devastations of the pandemic. This music reaches through the centuries as a reminder of the connections with our ancestors whose experiences relate closer to ours than we may think.
