The Band of Heathens is a popular high-energy Americana/Indie rock band from Austin, Texas. Their very first recording (Live from Momo’s) brought them national attention as an up-and-coming Americana band, and they were voted Best New Band at the 2007 Austin Music Awards. Their first studio album, The Band of Heathens (2008), featured notable guests Patty Griffin, Stephen Bruton, and Gurf Morlix, and went directly to #1 on the Americana Music Association’s radio charts. A year later, their second studio album, One Foot in the Ether, also hit #1. In 2009 the band taped at Austin City Limits, and their set was paired on PBS with one by Elvis Costello.

During the following decade, the Heathens toured widely and continued their impressive creative output. In 2017 the group made its own version of Ray Charles’ classic 1972 album, A Message from the People. The Heathens’ most recent recording, Stranger (2020), offers “a bounty of vocal riffs, catchy hooks, inspired playing, and creative lyrics” (popmatters.com). Despite its title, it is “a warm, enveloping album with a positive message of understanding and compassion that’s just right for the times” (rollingstone.com).
