A Walk in My Shoes

As part of Armour After Dark, DCP is proud to offer our space to artists and theatre companies in the Charlotte region who are debuting bold, innovative new work. We begin this initiative with A Walk in My Shoes.

Enjoy original r&b, hip-hip, jazz and gospel performances from the Broadway-bound musical A Walk in My Shoes. This sensational concert-style production merges the magic of theatre with the vitality of live music experiences.

Book, Lyrics, and Songs by Jermaine Nakia Lee
Poems by L'Monique King
Co-composition by Tyrone Jefferson
Musical Direction by JR McQueen

A Walk in My Shoes is the tumultuous tale of four “day one” friends grappling with the complexities of young adulthood. Secrets will be revealed. Their indelible bond will be tested. The only certainty is, nothing will ever be the same.

A Walk in My Shoes is an urban musical that highlights the complex challenges faced by many Black, Brown, and LGBTQ+ GenZ’s today; teens and young adults way too familiar with addiction, hopelessness, risky sexual behavior, poverty, and social stigma.

Head Over Heels

Original Book by Jeff Whitty; Adaptation by James Magruder; Music by The Go-Go’s

A Greek/Renaissance jukebox romp set to music of The Go-Go’s.

For our flagship summer musical, we present one of the quirkiest, most buoyant Broadway bops of the past decade. A wacky mash-up of a classic adventure (Magical kingdoms! True love! Mistaken identities!) and the iconic 80s music of The Go-Go’s, Head Over Heels is a joyful, affirming crowdpleaser that bridges centuries with its message of hope and love.

Audience members aged 30 and under can purchase $15 in our Dionysus Section up front!

RUMORS

By Neil Simon

DCP is proud to support this project from Matt Merrell Productions. Matt, our former Executive Director, continues a tradition of classic comedies in the Duke Family Performance Hall in July.

At a large, tastefully-appointed townhouse in the Manhattan suburbs, the Deputy Mayor of New York has just shot himself. Though it's only a flesh wound, Charlie Brock's self-inflicted injury sets off a series of events causing four couples to experience a severe attack of farce.

As their tenth wedding anniversary party commences, Charlie lies bleeding in another room while his wife is nowhere in sight. The first guests scramble to get “the story” straight before the other guests arrive. As the confusions and miscommunications mount, the evening spins off into classic farcical hilarity.

Lake Town Stories - Inspired by the legendary organization The Moth, Lake Town Stories will be a live night of community storytelling. Anyone who is interested in performing can bring a 5-minute personal narrative that relates to the evening’s theme. Storytellers will be selected in a live drawing. Stories must be true, involve you, and have a change from beginning to end. Otherwise, any range of funny, vulnerable, or unfathomable events are welcome to be the focus!
