Guy Clark Tribute with Verlon Thompson & Shawn Camp

Saturday, June 8
7:30 PM

Verlon Thompson & Shawn Camp toured with Guy, alone and together, for decades. They each worked on a bunch of albums with him, picking up Grammy Nominations and Awards along the way. Having spent a big part of their lives in the trenches with Guy, supporting him, learning from him and loving him, they decided to come together to share some special memories and the unforgettable music of their old friend Guy Clark. No Depression magazine said the show was “a touching tribute concert that offered music, memories, humor, happenstance, tall tales and even tears.”

In case you don’t know about this master craftsman songwriter, here’s a list of some artists who’ve covered Guy Clark songs. Jerry Jeff Walker, Tom Rush, Rita Coolidge, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings, Slim Pickens, and Nanci Griffith. And that’s just one song, “Desperados Waiting for a Train”. Other songs have been hits for Ricky Skaggs, who went to #1 with Clark’s song “Heartbroke”. Vince Gill had a Top 10 country hit with “Oklahoma Borderline”. Kenny Chesney named an album after his version of Guy’s “Hemingway’s Whiskey”, and it went to #1 on the Billboard Pop Album Chart.

Elizabeth Cook

Saturday, August 10
7:30 PM

Elizabeth Cook is an American country music singer and radio host. She has made over 400 appearances on The Grand Ole Opry, the most of any non-member. She’s also made 6 appearances on The Late Show with David Letterman, and he has appeared on her radio show Elizabeth Cook's Apron Strings on Sirius XM’s Outlaw Country only once, but he hardly ever goes anywhere.

Cook is "the daughter of a hillbilly singer married to a moonshiner who played his upright bass while in a prison band. Elizabeth was onstage singing with them when she was 4. She formed her first band when she was 9. Her album, Balls, produced by Rodney Crowell, including "Sometimes It Takes Balls to Be a Woman”, shows that she’s clearly not your grandma’s country singer.

In addition to her radio show, her TV show, Upstream with Elizabeth Cook, features her joining a musical guest as they talk music, explore inane topics, share deep thoughts, and try to catch fish. Fishing isn’t the goal. It seems she’s not your grandpa’s country singer either.

Seals & Crofts II

Saturday, September 21
7:30 PM

Brady Seals is part of an extended musical family. Aside from Brady, the Seals clan includes his cousins Jimmy Seals (Seals & Crofts), and Dan Seals (England Dan & John Ford Coley) and his uncle, Songwriting Hall of fame member Troy Seals.

For his part, Brady Seals has sold over eleven million albums and topped the charts in three music
genres simultaneously. Most music listeners first noticed Brady during his time as keyboardist and
vocalist with the group Little Texas. Brady co-wrote three consecutive #1 songs for the band (“What Might Have Been,” “God Blessed Texas,” and “My Love”) winning him ASCAP’s Triple Play award.

Brady teamed up with Lua Crofts, daughter of Darrell ‘Dash’ Crofts. A talented and soulful vocalist, Lua grew up in Los Angeles following in her father’s footsteps. Her first experience as a session singer was at the tender age of seven when she accompanied both her mother and father to sing on a session. She went on to become an in-demand session singer, singing background vocals on many popular R&B albums for artists like Rahsaan Patterson, Tevin Campbell, Ray J, and many more. She was also featured on “Better Days” off of legendary Producer/Guitar player Louie Shelton’s 1998 Smooth Jazz album “Hot & Spicy”.

More than simply a tribute to the legendary Seals & Crofts, they play all the hits, some new stuff, and of course some Little Texas.

Rodney Crowell

Saturday, October 5
7:30 PM

Rodney Crowell is a Grammy-winning singer-songwriter from Texas who has written hits for many country stars, including Emmylou Harris, Johnny Cash and June Carter, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Wynonna Judd, and Willie Nelson. He started his career in Nashville in the 1970s befriending fellow Texans Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark and joining Harris's Hot Band as a guitarist and vocalist. He married Rosanne Cash in 1979, and they collaborated on several albums and singles, including the acclaimed King's Record Shop in 1987.

He wrote many songs that helped other artists get to No. 1. Waylon Jennings’ 1979 rendition of Crowell’s “I Ain’t Living Long Like This” went straight to No. 1 on the Hot Country Songs chart. The Oak Ridge Boys took his “Leaving Louisiana in the Broad Daylight” to No. 1. Crystal Gayle grabbed a No. 1 country hit with “’Til I Gain Control Again,” while Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band pushed their 1982 cover of Crowell’s “Shame on the Moon” into the top five of the pop charts.

Rodney had his own breakthrough as a solo artist in 1988, with the album Diamonds & Dirt. Not to be outdone by other artists’ covers of his songs, five singles from Diamonds & Dirt went to No.1 on the country charts. In the years since, he’s continued to explore different musical styles and genres, from rock to bluegrass to Americana, earning critical acclaim and loyal fans.
