RENTAL - Palos Verdes Ballet Firebird & Chopiniana

Norris Theatre

  • May 28, 7:00pm   and  May 29, 1:00 & 5:00pm

A tale of love and the triumph of good over evil will transport theater patrons to a place of wonder and mystery when Palos Verdes Ballet presents “Firebird.” Directed by Sae Rom Lee Strickland, this presentation will reflect Michael Fokin’s original Russian folk tale, with music by Igor Stravinsky. Highlights of the Palos Verdes Ballet presentation include an exquisite performance by its very own pre-professional student dancers.

Palos Verdes Ballet’s alumna, Norika Matsuyama, Soloist of San Francisco Ballet, will return to the Norris stage to portray the role of Firebird, exemplifying the whimsical nature of the tale of the glittering bird with magical powers, with the Tartarian Russian hunter Prince Ivan, to be performed by San Francisco Ballet’s Nathaniel Remez. As Prince Ivan’s nemesis, Kastchei will be performed by Priit Kripson, former Bolshoi Ballet artist.

The performance will include the next generation of young dancers including student Christine Ng, who recently placed in the top 12 of the Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) competition, and is invited to dance in Moscow IBC Summer Intensive, Nervi International Dance Festival, and the 2022 San Francisco Ballet Summer Intensive. Yuyan Wang, who is invited to attend the 2022 Bolshoi Academy Summer Intensive, will debut in the roles of “Firebird” and “Princess Nadeshda.” The program will include “Chopiniana,” the beautiful score by Frederic Chopin, and Garland Waltz, danced by a beautiful and promising younger generation of student dancers.

Palos Verdes Ballet has 21 years of a tradition of presenting YAGP competition variations, and the highlights from this year will also be showcased. Last but not least, Norika Matsuyama and Nathaniel Remez will perform Victor Gsovsky’s masterpiece, “Grand Pas Classique” to the famous musical score by Daniel Auber.  Step into the amazing fantasy world of ballet; it will be a special time to celebrate and spend quality time with family and friends. You don’t want to miss this opportunity to see the future of dance!
