La Púrpura de la Rosa / The Blood of the Rose

MASTERWORKS SERIES -January 2023

La Púrpura de la Rosa (The Blood of the Rose) recounts the famous, fated, forbidden love affair between Venus, the Goddess of Love, and the very mortal and handsome Adonis. This version, in Spanish, with a libretto by none other than the great Golden Age dramatist, Pedro Calderón de la Barca, is told in one act. Filled with suspense, seduction, and comedy this opera’s music is the star of the show. Come and experience the rich harmonies, plaintive melodies and the dance rhythms that permeate this piece, which was the first opera to be performed in the Americas (Lima, 1701), composed by Tomás de Torrejón y Velasco.
