The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
Music and Lyrics by William Finn Book by Rachel Sheinkin
Directed by Susannah Martin • Music Direction by Joel Chapman •
Choreography by Natalie Greene & Katherine Skinner
Welcome toThe 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee! Allow me to introduce nine quirky (but lovable!) middle school competitors, all hoping to be crowned champion. From the home-schooled Leaf Coneybear to the over-achiever Marcy Park, to politically vehement (and youngest competitor) Logainne ShwartzandGrubenniere, to the incumbent champ, Charlito "Chip" Tolentino, to the shy and neglected Olive Ostrovsky, to the "bully" (and allergy challenged), William Barfée. And let's not forget Rona Lisa Perretti, a Putnam County real estate agent – and winner of the 3rd annual Bee – she runs the Bee! Or Vice Principal Douglas Panch, the word pronouncer, and Mitch Mahoney, the "comfort counselor" for eliminated contestants. Mitch is participating as part of his community service. We're so happy to have him!
Each night, Ms. Perretti, Mr. Panch, and Mr. Mahoney will screen four volunteers from the audience to compete in the Bee along with our nine students. All Bee participants will interact with these volunteers. If you end up on the gym risers with the other spellers, make sure you go for the trophy!
Please join us for this hilarious and poignant tribute to spelling bees, the joy of language, the love of learning, and the power of friendship.
The UHS Theatre Department's Senior Celebration will immediately follow the show's closing performance!
