5:30 pm Fiesta

7:00 p.m. Film Screening

The classic buddy movie, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, tops off the current film series at a “transformed” Tryon Fine Arts Center on Tuesday, May 10th. The evening will begin with a Fiesta! of fine food and drink appropriate to the Wild West and South American locales of the movie. Prizes will be awarded to the best costumed pair.

This 1969 tongue-in-cheek, Western starring the great duo, Paul Newman and Robert Redford, brings to a close TFAC’s “back to the big screen” season. The fiesta willl begin at 5:30 and the screening will begin at 7:00 p.m. Prizes will be awarded to the best lady and gentleman and mustaches will be appreciated.

Based on the true story of a couple of outlaws, Robert LeRoy Parker, also known as Butch Cassidy (Paul Newman), and Harry Longabaugh, the Sundance Kid (Robert Redford) and Sundance’s girlfriend, Etta Place (Katherine Ross) as they try to evade the United States posse after a string of train robberies. The film is known for a number of great lines, including the brief exchange as the two buddies are about to jump off a cliff into a river: Sundance to Butch “I can’t swim!” Butch “Are you crazy? The fall will probably kill you."

Despite somewhat mixed early reviews, the film quickly gained popularity with movie goers to become the highest grossing film of the year and won an astounding number of awards, including Oscars for Screenplay (William Goldman), Cinematography (Conrad Hall), and both Score and Song for Burt Bacharach and Hal David for “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head”, which also won the ASCAP Music Award and the Grammy. The British Academy Film Awards went to George Roy Hill for Best Film and Best Director, Robert Redford and Katherine Ross for Best Actor and Actress (Paul Newman was nominated) as well as Best Screenplay, Cinematography, Editing, Music, and Sound. Numerous other awards came pouring including Golden Globes, and Laurels.

The Fiesta includes a selection of South American food (including shrimp, chicken, steak sandwiches, and antipasta), 2 glasses of beer or wine, the movie ticket, pictures with the stars and entry into the costume contest. Tickets for the fiesta are recommended as seating will be limited.
