THE CURIOUS SAVAGE, written by John Patrick, is characterized as high comedy.
Synopsis: Ethel P. Savage, an elderly woman whose husband recently died and left her ten million dollars, wants to make the best use of this inheritance, despite her grown-up stepchildren’s effort to get their hands on the money. Knowing the widow’s wealth is untouchable, the stepchildren commit her to a sanatorium. Contrasting the kindness and loyalty of psychiatric patients with the avarice and vanity of “respectable” public figures, it calls into question conventional definitions of sanity while lampooning celebrity culture.
