To Cross- Aganakake Tatang Ko

To Cross- Aganakake Tatang Ko ("I Remember My Father") is a four-part music suite and multimedia live performance that explores the grief of familial/generational loss and celebrates Filipino/a/x mythology and futurism. This is the premiere of composer Josh Icban’s music and the workshop theatrical presentation which features a live band, movement artists, experimental multimedia projections, a lighting score, and memories engaged as living moments. The piece honors Josh’s father, Elviro Icban, who passed in 2020. Elviro was a US Navy Veteran, Martial Law activist, community organizer, musician, immigrant, and American citizen.

The title refers to an English translation of Icban, an indigenous Kapampangan name, which means 'to cross.’ Geographically, the province of Pampanga, located in the central Luzon region of the Philippines, contains many rivers and riverbanks. The performance expands on multiple crossing themes inherent in diasporic communities, including identity/expectation, home/placemaking, and death/rebirth.
