Phedre
The National Theatre begins its second season of broadcasts with Phedre, the epic play by Racine, adapted by the late poet Ted Hughes. In Phdre, famed actress Helen Mirren plays a women consumed by an uncontrollable passion for her young stepson. Believing Theseus, her absent husband, to be dead, she confesses her darkest desires and enters the world of nightmare. When Theseus returns, alive and well, Phdre, fearing exposure, accuses her stepson of rape. The result is carnage.
