The Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program (NNPP), also known as Naval Reactors, a joint Navy and Department of Energy program, has operated since 1950 at the Naval Reactors Facility (NRF) located on the Idaho National Laboratory (INL). The NNPP is responsible for all matters of U.S. Navy nuclear propulsion, from design through operations and end of life. The nuclear propulsion plant prototype S1W at NRF served as the prototype for the first nuclear-powered submarine, the USS Nautilus (SSN 571). The prototype A1W was subsequently constructed at NRF and provided the prototype for the first nuclear-powered surface ship propulsion plant designs. Three prototypes at NRF, including S1W, A1W, and S5G, operated from 1953 to 1995. These prototypes were used both to test new naval nuclear propulsion plant technology and to train nearly 40,000 Navy Sailors, officers and civilian nuclear operators at the NRF.

As the NRF prototypes have reached the end of their lives, NNNP is working closely with the Idaho State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) and Idaho Public Television to document and preserve this important part of our history in the form of a documentary that will eventually air on Idaho Public Television.

On Nov. 30, Naval Reactors, with support from the SHPO and the City of Idaho Falls, is proud to host the premier showing of Idaho Public Television’s documentary about the history of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program and NRF.
