In the 1930’s, on a wind-swept island in the Irish North Sea there is precious little news to relieve the sameness of everyday life – and the news is often of no great quality: the blacksmith’s daughter’s baby has the colic, or Jim Finnegan had a sheep born with no ears …

But now a new piece of news has arrived – a great piece of news! – news like a lifeline thrown to a desolate person on this desolate island: the Cripple of Inishmaan.
