Whitby, 8th April, 1897. A great and sudden storm has deposited a foreign
schooner with sails set upon the sand and gravel of Tate Hill Pier. A search
revealed but a corpse lashed to the helm and at the moment of landfall an
immense bat filtered up from the below decks of the Demeter and disappeared
into the darkness. So begins the journey to the light.
