City of Angels is a satirical musical comedy that pays homage to the 1940s film noir genre, and Hollywood's Golden Age. It is a story within a story, featuring Stine a writer noted for his series of detective novels featuring a private eye named Stone. One of his books is optioned for a film, with Stine hired to write the screenplay. The play then alternates between the novel turned film and the mystery of a missing heiress, and the real world where Stine learns how things really work in Hollywood.
City of Angels features a fantastic, jazz-infused score, and won six Tonys on Broadway, including Best Musical, Best Score/Lyrics, Best Lead Actor, Best Featured Actress & Best Scenic Design.
