John Clayton, Eric Reed, and the Jazz Mamas

Part of the Sierra Madre Playhouse Jazz Series, curated by Greg Porée

John Clayton is one of the most respected double bassists working today—equally at home in jazz and classical contexts. With a career spanning decades, he has performed with the Count Basie Orchestra, led the acclaimed Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, and held one of the highest positions in European symphonic bass before returning to the U.S. His deep rhythmic foundation, rich tone, compositional savvy and wide musical curiosity make him a special artist. For the audience, this means something special: close-up access to Clayton’s artistry, clear aural detail in a small venue, and the opportunity to hear a master musician in a setting that strips away layers and brings focus to sound, texture and interaction. Whether you come as a jazz enthusiast or simply appreciate high-level musicianship, this performance promises depth, elegance and musical generosity.

Joining acclaimed bassist John Clayton for an intimate evening of exceptional jazz is renowned pianist Eric Reed—known for collaborations with legends like Wynton Marsalis and Freddie Hubbard. The program also features The Jazz Mamas — vocalists Valerie Monroe, Angie Wells, and Didi Wilson — three remarkable artists performing together for the first time. Each will be showcased in featured sets, culminating in a joyful finale with all five performers.

Celebrating Los Angeles talent and the spirit of Mother’s Day, this special performance at the Sierra Madre Playhouse brings together artists you won’t want to miss.
