R3 by Portland Experimental Theatre Ensemble
This is Shakespeares Richard III, but told by the storys women and for a contemporary audience. Using a liberal cutting of the text, the piece foregrounds the role of the queens in the rise and fall of a monstrous tyrant. Who and what makes this monster? Who is responsible for his creation and actions? R3 employs rigorous movement, muscular language and bold theatrical imagery to interrogate our own, contemporary feelings of power and powerlessness. The piece examines the timeless role of women as mourners, furies, and advocates of peace in times of war.
