Piedmont Wind Symphony opens a vivid musical window into American imagination, innovation, and restless energy with American Gothic. Led by Artistic Director and Conductor Mark A. Norman, this dynamic program celebrates bold voices and striking sonic landscapes.
The evening begins with Adam Gorb’s exuberant Awayday, a whirlwind homage to the golden age of Broadway. It is followed by Viet Cuong’s electrifying Re(new)al, a percussion concerto that transforms both traditional and “found” instruments into a kaleidoscope of sound. Featured soloists Garrett Arney, Peter White, Ksenija Komljenović, and Antek Olesik bring this work to life with precision, creativity, and collaborative energy.
Clarinetist Andy Hudson takes center stage in Frank Ticheli’s Concerto for Clarinet and Wind Ensemble, a virtuosic and expressive journey inspired by Gershwin, Copland, and Bernstein. The program culminates in Michael Daugherty’s American Gothic, a vibrant and deeply personal reflection on the iconic artwork of Grant Wood and the spirit of the American Midwest, featuring fiddler Rex McGee.
