This year, to honor the 250th anniversary of American Independence, Town Hall Theater's Young Company will perform 1776, the Tony Award-winning hit from 1969, by Sherman Edwards and Peter Stone. This is the 12th production in the popular series of summer musicals performed by teens, under the direction of Douglas Anderson.
The musical focuses on the struggle of the Continental Congress to produce the Declaration of Independence. Characters include Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin and John Adams.
“The show is quite funny, and the music is really wonderful, but it’s also a great history lesson,” says Anderson. “We forget that the 13 colonies weren’t particularly fond of each other.” The delegates argued over such controversial subjects as slavery, and even whether to join together as one country. “South Carolina would have been quite content to become the Independent Country of South Carolina. It had no use for the Northerners,” says Anderson.
The show is notable for its historical accuracy, using historical facts and even quotes from actual letters between John and Abigail Adams.
