Since its 2011 premiere at the Virginia Arts Festival, Rappahannock County has drawn on the diaries, letters, and firsthand accounts of soldiers, enslaved people, families, and civilians living through the Civil War. Composer Ricky Ian Gordon and librettist Mark Campbell, a Pulitzer Prize and Grammy Award winner, built the piece as a series of musical portraits rather than a single narrative, tracing the war's arc from secession to defeat through the voices of ordinary Virginians.

Set in Virginia but resonating well beyond it, the opera sits at themes of freedom, loss, and reconciliation that stay relevant fourteen years after its premiere and 250 years after the country's founding. Gordon's lyrical score and Campbell's libretto offer an intimate look at the human cost of war, and the culminating production of the Music in Troubled Times Festival. Post-show conversations with the cast and creative team follow each performance.
