The Musical of Musicals (the Musical!) is a musical about musicals! A single story is given five hysterically satirical tellings, each one presented in the distictive style of a different master of musical theater: the Rodgers & Hammerstein version is set in Kansas in August and includes a dream ballet; the Sondheim version has a tortured artistic genius of a landlord who slashes throats in revenge for an unappreciative public; the Jerry Herman version is a tuneful, splashy star vehicle; the Andrew Lloyd Webber version is a rock musical with themes borrowed from Puccini; and the Kander & Ebb version camps it up in a Chicago speakeasy. This comic homage to musical theatre was the longest running show in the York Theatre Company's 35-year history before moving to Off-Broadway.
