A former military engineer treks to Cuba, Kerala, and Slovenia to find out what a sustainable, women-led future actually looks like

Saving Walden's World follows Jim Merkel, a former military engineer turned sustainability activist, as he raises his son Walden on an off-grid homestead in Maine. The film travels with him to Cuba, Kerala, and Slovenia, where he documents women-led communities that have built extraordinary qualities of life by prioritizing healthcare, literacy, and reproductive freedom. It doesn't just lay out the problem. It shows that the solutions already exist, and that people are already living them.

The film has screened at 23 international film festivals and won 14 awards. It has been accepted for national distribution on PBS via NETA and selected for the 29th UNAFF, the United Nations Association Film Festival.

Jim Merkel joins for a Q&A immediately following the screening.
