RENT, created by Jonathan Larson, is a rock musical inspired by Puccini’s La Bohème, set in the late 1980s and early 1990s in Manhattan’s East Village. It centers on a diverse group of friends navigating poverty, addiction, gentrification, and the AIDS epidemic while pursuing their artistic dreams and personal relationships. 

The musical’s title reflects both the literal payment of rent and the emotional costs of life, highlighting the characters’ struggles to sustain themselves financially, emotionally, and artistically.

RENT won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Musical.
