LOVE HANDYLS
STAGED READING
Every great band has its male heterosexual love affair. You got your John and Paul, your Mick and Keith, your Bruce and Clarence, your Paul and Artie. Most of them end up hating each other.
Eli was Phil’s Garfunkel.
The Love Handyls tells the story of two childhood friends united by their passion for rock and roll until their failed attempt to become rock stars leads to a painful split. Years later, they call a tentative truce in an attempt to repair their friendship by forming a late middle-aged rock band.
The Love Handyls (spelled with a “y” as a tribute to their passion for sixties music) is not a traditional musical. (Nobody bursts into song singing “Look at me I’m in a band!”) Instead, we watch a series of rehearsals featuring songs about what they’re experiencing in each scene — some covers, some originals – as they progress from pretty crappy to pretty good.
