KULARTS EDUCATION & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT PROGRAMS PRESENT:
Kalag-Kalag Ritwal [kah-LUGG kah-LUGG] event is an opportunity for community to gather and participate in creating diasporic ritual rooted in the rich indigenous spiritual traditions of Adlaw ng mga Kalag in Bisaya or Araw ng mga Kaluluwa in Tagalog or All Souls Day, the ritual ceremonies of kangguana of the Maguindanaoan and pag-umboh of the Sama Badjao.
KULARTS invites you to, “Kalag-Kalag” a communal remembrance of our lineages and our loved ones across both physical and spiritual realms, by gathering together and collectively building a Dambanang Banal [dumb-BUH-nang buh-NULL] , an ephemeral sacred shrine of healing and memory.
Participatory building of the Dambanang Banal [altar or sacred shrine]
At the center of the room floats a living shrine, a ceremonial spirit boat, the ancient vessel of transit for the soul, carrying our prayers across the unseen waters between worlds. The spirit boat honors our Austronesian ancestors, and is actively transformed and brought to life through the physical contributions of objects, dance, and music and the intentions of everyone in attendance.
Attendees are encouraged to wear indigenous clothing, malong, tubao, etc. and contribute to the building of the dambanang banal [dumb-BUH-nang buh-NULL] with flameless candles, flowers, fresh aromatic botanicals, incense, rice & fruits for atang, as well as and photos and/or other memorabilia of loved ones to be honored and remembered.
Communal creation of movement meditation and prayers
The evening will be accompanied by live music and we encourage participants to bring musical instruments to play, We will create movement meditation ritual facilitated by Sama Master Artist Al-Raffy Harun,“Manai” Alleluia Panis, and APDT/Tribu Tur alumni.
