“Fill the Void,” the most successful independent Israeli film to be released in the past decade, tells the story of 18-year-old Shira, youngest daughter of an Orthodox Hassidic family, who is about to be married off to a promising young man of similar age and background. When her older sister dies giving birth to her first child, the family’s ensuing grief postpones Shira’s promised match. And when her mother proposes a match between her and her sister’s widower, Shira faces a difficult choice.
