The intriguing documentary Somm will make you look at your restaurant’s sommelier in a new light. Shining a beacon on the little-known culture of wine connoisseurs called The Court of Master Sommeliers, who tout themselves on their obscure knowledge of the world of wine, Somm follows four individuals who are attempting to become a part of this exclusive club that has accepted fewer than 200 new members since 1969. The extremely detailed and difficult test takes years and countless glasses of wine to prepare for. Competitive in nature, and with their eyes firmly set on the prize that will bring those that succeed a lucrative career in the fine dining industry, as well as bragging rights, the film follows its subjects as they hone their senses and challenge the impossible. Kenneth Turan of The Los Angeles Times calls Somm “glib and ultimately engaging.”
