INHERIT THE WIND

The evolution vs creationism argument is at the center of this American classic, inspired by the 1925 “Scopes Monkey Trial,” in which Tennessee schoolteacher John Scopes is brought to trial for violating state law by teaching Darwin’s Theory of Evolution. In the play’s fictionalized account, two distinguished attorneys (based on William Jennings Bryan and Clarence Darrow) trade intense, spirited arguments for and against the beleaguered teacher. This is classic, riveting, historical courtroom drama, with a bit of science and a little monkey-business.
