Freedom Summer

Monday, August 18, 7:30pm
The Tabernacle, Oak Bluffs
With Stanley Nelson, Henry Louis Gates Jr., Gwen Iffil and John Forte

History was made in the summer of 1964. This stirring film by award-winning documentarian and Vineyard seasonal resident Stanley Nelson delves deep into that paramount time during which more than 700 student activists transformed the segregated state of Mississippi by registering African-American voters, creating freedom schools, and establishing the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party. Impressive archival footage, paired with testimonials from participants, shines light on the tremendous efforts made in the pursuit of civil rights for all.
