In the summer of 1865, the government of the United States of America put Henry Wirz, the Warden of Andersonville Prison, on trial for atrocities committed during the Civil War. This play is based upon the official record of that trial. Although the characters are real historical personages, and events are accurately depicted as to time and place, the work in question is a legal drama and expresses the author’s own conception of these personalities and events - it is to be read as a work of fiction and not a documentary.
